The work of Oswaldo Vigas is characterized by a strong stroke, inspired in the archetypes of the female figure and in the emotional irrationality.
Venezuelan by birth, Vigas deconstructed the academic art that prevailed until the 40s in the neighboring country. With his proposal known as "the witches series" (female bodies inspired by pre-Columbian art) he consolidated as the first modern artist in Venezuela.
Now, the work of the master of bright and plane colored geometric bodies is exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota (Mambo).
According to Lorenzo Vigas, the artist's son and chairman of the Oswaldo Vigas Foundation, this exhibition is so far the only one that gathers all the artistic stages of the master.
"Guests will find paintings from the period when my dad was 13, from the period of the witches series, from the period of his constructivist stage when he lived in Paris and from the period of his return to the origins with informalism, the sudden stroke and free painting."
The exhibition which opened yesterday, and that consists of 70 paintings and five sculptures by the artist will last until August 23rd.
The note:
"We have to go out and show what is happening"
According to Lorenzo Vigas, the art exhibition also aims to visualize the current state of Venezuela. "
"At the moment when the country is so isolated, the work has a special value to be sweeping across the continent," he said.
"It's a reaction to what is happening today in the political, economic and cultural Venezuela; politicians make as fell in love with ideas of Latin American integration, but the reality is that Venezuela is more isolated than ever, "Vigas said.
The earliest works in the exhibition are Tetragramista, Ciudadano elector and Composición IV, from the year 1943. Furthermore, the most recent are Maternidad con pájaro and Crucifixión, from 2013.
"Whoever confronts the painting of my father feels emotions, he does not conceptualize; everything is totally violent, irrational and visceral" sentenced Vigas.
