The exhibition, which brings 65 works of Oswaldo Vigas, one of the most important South American artists, will begin to be shown on April 2 and will continue until July 3. The works of the great Latin American artist, Oswaldo Vigas, will be exhibited in Brazil, specifically in São Paulo, starting next weekend. The exhibition is called Oswaldo Vigas: Anthological 1943-2013, and will be inaugurated on Saturday April 2 and may be visited at the MAC USP, with free admission to the public until July.
The exhibition "Oswaldo Vigas: Anthological 1943-2013" presents 63 paintings and five sculptures, in which various periods of the artist's work, who is considered by many as a master of arts can be admired. The exhibition, which arrives in Brazil this year, has already visited several countries in the Americas such as Chile, Colombia, Mexico and the United States.
Oswaldo Vigas’ works that will be available to be admired show the artist's life and his experience in the Americas over time. In the work of Vigas, elements of nature such as minerals, plants and animals, which are expressed through cosmogonical images, arise. In his work, Vigas, beside grasping nature, sticks to the female figure, showing the mythical link to the land and based on the idea that women, as well as land, is the origin of life.
The artist Oswaldo Vigas is considered a key figure in the history of Latin American art, having legitimized the cultural heritage of the region by reviewing his own artistic roots through the prism of his global perspective on the arts. His work is an original connection between the cultural roots of Latin America with the most current artistic tendencies of modernity.
The work of Vigas includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics and tapestries. The artist participated throughout his life, in over one hundred solo exhibitions and his work is present in many institutions that are located worldwide.
The curatorship of the exhibition Oswaldo Vigas: Anthological 1943 - 2013 was made by writer, historian and former director of the Art Museum of the Americas Bélgica Rodríguez, who is working also with Katja Weitering, the current holder of the position of artistic director of the CoBrA Museum of Modern Art that is located in Amsterdam.
